Sad new that a driver died in the LeMons race at CMP yesterday. Early indications are that they suffered a health related issue, possible heart attack, prior to the crash and that the car did what it was supposed to do. Sympathies go out to the friends, teammates and family of driver and all the folks at CMP.
LeMons and ChumpCar are a lot of fun and a good laugh, but when you strap yourself into the car it is as real as it gets. There is heat, stress, risk of impact, fire and everything else you would see in any other form of racing.

It seems another heart attack. That's two now isn't it?

I'm relieved that it's not series/safety related. I would hate to see "junk yard racing, is it too dangerous???" headlines.
Still sad, none the less.

Yeah.

Too true. All racing has an element of risk. I don't think LeMons is any more risky than any other.

Are the medical/physical requirements any more lax than other amateur racing organization? I remember scanning over the rulebook once and remembered that there was no driving school required (I think)....

No driving school (wouldn't have mattered here) and a strong recommendation for a physical.

The sad part is that even a physical wouldn't have found coronary blockage without an extensive stress test, and even then it is not as definitive as coronary imaging.
Coming from a family with a history of heart disease and my father having a quintuple bypass at age 49, I've been trying to be healthier and exercise as much as I can. I hope it will be enough.
All the best to the family involved.

My brother did have heart issues, but we didn't know how severe. I appreciate all the kind words of support. My brother raced when he was in high school and college and didn't start up again until his kids were grown. He loved the sport and we are thankful that he got to race again the last several years. I am thankful that no one else was involved in his tragic accident and I know my brother had a smile up until that fateful moment.

Bev, you and your family have the sympathies of the entire community. The folks who race LeMons are such neat people. Loosing one is a loss for us all.
